Let’s Face It

In the last hub of this series we talked about the eyes. What are the eyes without the face? There are still cheeks, lips, a nose and forehead to cover. When I say cover I mean that two fold in that we will cover the subject as well as consider different “coverings” for them if needed or desired.

Men generally do not care to take care of their face or use cosmetics like women or do they? According to this article post on Askmen.com three years ago, men spent over one billion dollars on grooming products in 2002 with skincare products totaling forty-seven million of that. Can you just imagine how much that has increased now with all the new products being offered to men at present? I am sure NPD Group, who provided the original statistics, could give us the tell tale numbers. I know that I personally have made the decision in recent years to take better care of my face as well as use cosmetics to improve or enhance my look.

It is no surprise that men have in fact used different types of skin care items as well as cosmetics for their face. Why should men do so now? Why not? Now more than ever, there are many products available to men to help with the grooming, enhancement and cleansing of their face. There are several different types of multi-blade razors, electric razors, trimmers and new shaving creams/gels available now. These aren’t the old disposable razors that won’t cut hot butter and creams that irritate the skin your grandpa and dad used. These new razors are very efficient at shaving with little effort or damage to the face. New creams and gels contain moisturizers and softeners to provide for a better, closer shave with little or no irritation to the skin. For those who maintain beards and other facial hair styles, there are many new trimmers out there as well. Men, please do not forget those nose hairs as well. There are new tools available for that as well including for the brows. I have yet to meet anyone who enjoys a bushy uni-brow or a curtain of nose hairs covering the nostrils.

Some say cleanliness is next to godliness. While it is true the priests and children of Israel used to cleanse themselves before certain times in interacting with the Father, it doesn’t really make you more godly. However, being dirty gets you nowhere except instant loss of interaction with friends, family and anyone else as well as poor health. While acne is a lot of times caused by diet, sometimes it is just as simple as a pore clogged with dirt and oil. The only way to keep that pore from clogging is to keep it clean. No one wants an embarrassing pimple anymore than the women they seek to impress want to gaze at them. Some may ask, why not just lather up the face with the same bar of soap you use for the rest of your body and hair? Most likely that bar of soap will dry the skin of your face out, causing flaking and irritation. The skin of the face is thinner and more sensitive than the rest of the body. Also, different man have different skin types and specialized facial products provide for those needs. Men, always, always, ALWAYS try to moisturize as it will keep your skin soft and supple, less prone to aging along with sun screen. Be sure to use a moisturizer that is not oily or you might find your pores clogged once again.

Now to the more interesting part of the subject, enhancement and cosmetics. Since I do not approve elective cosmetic surgery, I will not discuss that topic. However, if a man has taken care of his skin and face and is still unsatisfied with his look or is seeking to enhance their look from time to time then there are many wonderful cosmetic products available for that. There are concealers, eye creams, wrinkle creams, foundation and even eye liner available exclusively for men. There are a few companies out there catering specifically to men and more entering the market as time goes on. Though there are bronzers available specifically for men, I have not seen many blush or eye shadows available. For those of you like myself that like to go the extra mile in using them, you might have to just shop in the “women’s” department though I have not seen the cosmetic department labeled specifically for women. Do not let the gender labeling fool you either, especially if you are frugal like me. There is usually little or no difference between products labeled for men as opposed to women and the “women’s” products (though many are not actually labeled for women) are usually lower in price.

Saving Face

There are many good reasons to not only take care of the face and keep it clean but also use cosmetics. For instance, a good powder foundation can not only hide blemishes and other imperfections but also reduce shine by absorbing oil. I use a mineral powder that is good for this and also apparently provides some screening from the sun as my face has whitened some since using the foundation. Some foundations contain ingredients such as tea tree that is a natural antiseptic which helps prevent acne. There is ordinary chap stick for the average bloke but for those who are more daring, there are lip sticks and glosses available with moisturizers to help keep the lips hydrated as well as add a little color or nudes for the more conservative. Eye liner could provide protection from glare much like the eye black used by sports players. It is no secret too that if a man looks better, he is more confident, feels better about himself and will more likely get attention from the ladies. Stay tuned as we make our way from head to toe.

Whenever you take your jeans off, make sure you do the buttons and zips; this helps them maintain their shape.

Always air dry your jeans, never go for drying machines. This will protect them from rough tumbling in the dryer and putting them flat to air dry will prevent marks that may occur if you try to dry them on plastic or wooden dryers.

Iron them when they are little damp; this assures to keep their original shape.
